We knew there was rain coming but didn’t fully expect it to be the kind that stays the entire day (aka the Vancouver kind). We had to be at the ferry terminal by 3:30pm at the latest and even though it will be our shortest riding day yet, to give us as much time as possible, we set an alarm to wake up at 5:30am. It was raining moderately as we left Whycocomagh Provincial Park (where we camped last night) and then only got heavier. 35km or so later in Baddeck, we stopped for a coffee break completely drenched and seriously contemplated hitchhiking the rest of the way. Eventually we got back on the bike, pedalling towards Kelly’s Mountain as fast as possible to warm up. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1x2nFC_rxbnXNFhbmXhwiugeyMo0VCqqQ" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1x2nFC_rxbnXNFhbmXhwiugeyMo0VCqqQ" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;">The terrain was beautiful even with the rain, we had glimpses of many bays and the Cabot Trail area across. We pushed hard and stayed pretty much exclusively on the Trans Canada, stopping only 3 times just outside Antigonish, in Port Hastings and our stop for the night in Whycocomagh (a native community in the middle of Cape Breton). The highway on the main side of Nova Scotia wasn’t the best for riding especially since there was a lot of construction (if we had more time we would have definitely taken a different route!), so crossing the Canso Causeway onto Cape Breton was a great relief. Cape Breton was much quieter and more scenic, and I will certainly have to come back to explore the Cabot Trail!</div>Sherry Guhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09230010399512298509noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6492558121899739664.post-26647824427101482592022-07-04T05:10:00.000-07:002022-07-06T12:53:59.162-07:00Day 10: Bonshaw to Stellarton

Needless to say, a big day! </div><div><br></div><div>After leaving Tom’s house at 7:45ish, we went to Radical Edge bike shop in town to get Leanne’s bike assembled and checked properly. In the meantime, I also checked out the Fredericton Boyce Farmer’s Market and got some goodies that fueled us throughout the day! By the time we left Fredericton, it was almost 11am, super late for a big riding day but we weren’t too worried. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1x6EJR4LL-qwtaSbK7-Vp93OmWzIbjxDm" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1x6EJR4LL-qwtaSbK7-Vp93OmWzIbjxDm" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div><div>At the suggestion of the bike mechanic, we took the 105 and stayed on the north side of the St Johns River. The rain stayed with us for first 60km or so but it wasn’t nearly as bad as the downpour on my way to Rivere du Loup. Leanne got a flat 5km enroute to Jemseg but we managed to fix it on the road!</div><div><br></div><div>At Jemseg, we stopped at a gas station/road side restaurant for a hearty breakfast (even though it was past lunch time) before continuing on. We got back on the 105 before joining with the 102 for the biggest and most remote riding section of the day! The weather cleared up and we got beautiful glimpses of the Grand Lake! Somehow we only had to ride about 5km of the Trans Canada Highway today and the rest were all on quiet rural roads.</div><div><br></div><div>After many many kilometres of nothing but trees and lots of breaks, we finally made it to Salisbury, the village on the outskirts of Moncton! We stopped by the grocery store and ended up cooking dinner on a bench right outside, in true bike touring style! At the same time we also booked a place to stay in Moncton for the night, which turned out to be super fancy self-catering unit in a beautiful house! The last 23km was done mostly after sunset, which was a first for me in bike touring!</div>Sherry Guhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09230010399512298509noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6492558121899739664.post-52648101572162479732022-06-30T20:04:00.000-07:002022-07-03T19:51:55.532-07:00Day 7: Rest Day in FrederictonWhat an unusual Canada Day filled with very little activity! Leanne arrived around 10am as per scheduled but unfortunately her bike didn’t arrive on the same flight from Montreal. Our plans to check out the Canada Day festivities in town were scrapped and instead we spent the day chilling around Tom’s property eating lots of food and having conversations about all sorts of topics while waiting for her bike to show up. It was a real test of patience and letting go of situations that we can’t control and frankly we weren’t very good at it. Finally the delivery came 12 hours at 10pm! We started putting her bike together right away and can’t wait to finally get out on the road tomorrow!<div><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1ioAmrQ5-faOKX2GdXlsaOIoQntlaZwqY" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1ioAmrQ5-faOKX2GdXlsaOIoQntlaZwqY" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div>Sherry Guhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09230010399512298509noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6492558121899739664.post-36284720359099241082022-06-30T18:50:00.000-07:002022-06-30T18:50:41.054-07:00Day 6: Woodstock to Fredericton<div>Distance: 114.9km</div><div>Total distance: 566.4km</div><div>Average speed: 21.6km/h</div><div>Weather: cloudy with sunny breaks</div><div><br></div>I have made it from one capital city to another!<div><br></div><div>This morning, I woke up at the super late hour of 8am, likely because I decided to join the kids at the outdoor movie event next door in the park last night. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1qrXN2QYk1Os5WRIkfmt9ei_k9_BfbkhN" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1qrXN2QYk1Os5WRIkfmt9ei_k9_BfbkhN" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;">After parting ways with the other cycle tourist Gero, I stayed on this side of the river on what used to be he old Trans Canada Highway and ended up doing almost 60km without stopping! This section of New Brunswick is fairly remote, houses were sparse and it was mainly just me with the trees and river.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;">I stopped at Kings Landing, an open air museum/historical village set in the 1800s in a place called Prince William, and had one of the best muffins, before continuing on. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1l8jlvs96ePDnJ88j_jxg0xFPanAk31Rr" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1l8jlvs96ePDnJ88j_jxg0xFPanAk31Rr" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;">In Fredericton, I stopped at Savage Cycles, apparently the oldest bike shop in Canada, and finally fixed my fenders (which had been held by duct tape for hundreds of kilometres), got a new pair of bike shoes (because one of my shoes were completely falling apart, also held by duct tape), and a new water bottle (because I somehow lost one along the way today). Afterwards, I headed towards my host Tom’s home in Maryville. Right away I felt the headwind which was the opposite of the day before but became the theme of today. The terrain was mildly undulating, a bit hillier than days prior, and I felt like I was in a children’s drawing of green hills and a windy blue river.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=11A4EKN9NlUNEd_s_tM0kVCgFfh9mEdYo" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=11A4EKN9NlUNEd_s_tM0kVCgFfh9mEdYo" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div><div>Turns out that Grand Falls was the last French speaking town in New Brunswick, which was honestly nice because I could finally have deeper conversations with people again! I have always been told about the great hospitality of the people in the Maritimes and time and time again today it proved to be true. In the 5-10min that I stopped on the side of the road to adjust my fenders, 3 different cars stopped to ask if I was okay. </div><div>Today I was basically powered by dairy products and very little else. In Perth-Andover, I got a Swiss cheese which I carried for about 40km before consuming it all. And then in Florence-Bristol, I finally caved in after not drinking any coffee for the past 4 days and had a coffee milkshake from a road side stand. </div><div><br></div><div>Rural New Brunswick was a lot of ornate houses, huge acerages, churches and cemeteries. The campground host had set up a giant canopy tent and was kind enough to let us hunker down there for the night. </div>Sherry Guhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09230010399512298509noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6492558121899739664.post-62743009315810323582022-06-28T16:41:00.000-07:002022-06-28T17:21:28.198-07:00Day 4: Temiscouata Sur Le Lac to Grand FallsDistance: 122.7km<div>Total distance: 331.5km<br><div>Average speed: 22.2km/h</div><div>Weather: Sunny with some clouds</div><div><br></div><div>I made it to New Brunswick, which means I’m officially in the Maritime provinces, the whole point of this trip! To be fair, this part of New Brunswick seems just like Quebec and everyone speaks French still so it isn’t that different yet.</div><div><br></div><div>The perks of camping in a bivy sac: being woken up by the most glorious sunrise over the lake. Going out of Temiscouata Sur Le Lac, I stayed along the side roads by the lake and the view was like a dream at times. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1cyA8ApUGuXL43cTHkxTS2nPerhBQfolZ" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1cyA8ApUGuXL43cTHkxTS2nPerhBQfolZ" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1jUlCcg0NgZbNy05EA49azJE0M_6v1-2h" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1jUlCcg0NgZbNy05EA49azJE0M_6v1-2h" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div><div><br></div></div><div>It was rolling terrain filled with lots of green hills until Degelis where I took a short break. The before I knew it, I had passed the border of Quebec and New Brunswick. The sign was on the main highway so I didn’t even realize I had crossed until my phone changed times.</div><div><br></div><div>Unlike the first trip, I feel like my appetite actually decreased since starting cycling 4 days ago. In Edmundston I had to force myself to eat a small potato salad for lunch. People always talk about the grandeur of bike touring but few mention about the mind games that goes on behind the scenes. Despite it being perfect weather for cycling today, I spent a great part of the afternoon playing mind games with myself to try to cover the distance because my body for some reason didn’t have the energy.</div><div><br></div><div>I hugged the St John River closely and eventually rolled into the town of Grand Falls, where I stopped to admire the waterfalls that the town is named after, before heading to my host Isabelle’s home. Isabelle wasn’t actually home but there were two other bike tourists cycling from Halifax to Montreal staying there as well. We traded stories of cycling before tucking in for the night.</div><div><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1kzGZ4FAchO4NOi2ljX2FDEVTDXlP9vmR" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1kzGZ4FAchO4NOi2ljX2FDEVTDXlP9vmR" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div>Sherry Guhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09230010399512298509noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6492558121899739664.post-30376365983112334182022-06-27T17:30:00.000-07:002022-06-28T04:28:01.251-07:00Day 3: La Pocatiere to Temiscouata Sur le LacDistance: 130.8km<div>Total distance: 280.8km</div><div>Average speed: 20.3km/h</div><div>Weather: A mixed bag</div><div><br></div><div>It didn’t take long for the rain to find me even on the East Coast, at least it was a lot cooler today! After sleeping for what felt like 10 hours, I left La Pocatiere, returning onto the 132 and continued following the St Laurence. Houses were far more stretched out along this route and it felt like the prairies being surrounded by fields upon fields, except there were “mountains”!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><img alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1pZgum7VN5gtqDRIbdhTzHXQFq9SRAdkZ" src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1pZgum7VN5gtqDRIbdhTzHXQFq9SRAdkZ" style="height: auto; max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; width: auto;"><br></div><div>In the cute and colourful town of Kamouraska, I managed to wait out a brief period of heavy rain underneath a gazebo by a church, but my streak of luck didn’t last long. The skies really opened up for the next 20-30km and I ended up pedaling through small rivers for most of the way to Rivere du Loup, the visibility was so poor I couldn’t even see the St Laurence most of the time. I found another covered picnic shelter in a park by the Rivere du Loup visitor centre for lunch and finally this time the rain seemed to end for good!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><img alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1ML4zY0piolN7ycVhb3yDMCaITp-opADX" src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1ML4zY0piolN7ycVhb3yDMCaITp-opADX" style="height: auto; max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; width: auto;"><br></div><div>In the afternoon, I turned inland and said goodbye to La Route Verte 1 and the St Laurence for the last time. La Route Verte 8 which connected Rivere Du Loup to the New Brunswick border would have been perfect except that it was mostly unpaved, so I wasn’t too sure of the route to take for this stretch. I tried to stay on side roads as much as possible but that wasn’t possible for one section so I still ended up on the A85/185 highway for 20km or so which was slightly dicey especially since there was construction everywhere. Near the exit of Saint Louis du Ha! Ha! (what a name for a town!), a highway patrol van stopped me to say that I wasn’t allowed to bike on the highway (good thing I had already biked most of it haha) and sent me out to the exit. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><img alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1KYunStUz-Zc9Vcw1wPNe1LuQU2a3DLQl" src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1KYunStUz-Zc9Vcw1wPNe1LuQU2a3DLQl" style="height: auto; max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; width: auto;"><br></div><div>I cruised down to the beautiful town of Temiscouata Sur Le Lac, aptly named for being situated at the edge of Lake Temiscouata National Park, and stumbled upon Cantine Chez Raymonde. Of course I get lost enroute, but end up going through the streets of Vieux Quebec, which is always nice and brings back many memories.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1ZJiKR_7s3aGYCaUrqW1aGOmxAg5cDIpm" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1ZJiKR_7s3aGYCaUrqW1aGOmxAg5cDIpm" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;">I watched Chateau Frontenac get smaller and smaller as I said goodbye to Quebec City and crossed over to the southern side of the St Laurence River, a landmark that I shall follow for these two days. There were many other cyclists both on the ferry and on the roads in Levis, and I joined them on a beautiful bike path for about 5km on the other side. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1EUCAFxi6pXGmtWX5gYuUA9TdaiKU-207" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1EUCAFxi6pXGmtWX5gYuUA9TdaiKU-207" style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=11BAZVZGorKLOUT7rOa3wl87Hy_9R9QeJ" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=11BAZVZGorKLOUT7rOa3wl87Hy_9R9QeJ" style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;">Eventually I found my way onto Route 132 and pedaled into rural Quebec. It never felt super remote though; the</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"> towns blended into each other such that there was always a house or farm on the side of the road. And I saw cyclists in both directions the whole day! For my first century ride in a long time the terrain was very forgiving, it was essentially flat with some very gentle rolling hills. However, I was definitely not acclimized to the heat. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;">I had lunch in a park in the bigger city of Montmagny with many other picnickers, and from then onwards the temperature got hotter and hotter into the low 30s. I filled up my water bottles with ice and took lots of breaks, stopping at the Maritime Museum in L’Islet and many churches (mostly because they were cool inside 😅). The St Laurence widened more and more and looked like the ocean!</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1Evoz03O_v1JUPI0BsPFkQ9eMd__DRV6-" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1Evoz03O_v1JUPI0BsPFkQ9eMd__DRV6-" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1UFrxkAh1M1qhG9okS3MQ44SwJJk7JcHH" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1UFrxkAh1M1qhG9okS3MQ44SwJJk7JcHH" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1O-UP3b1Bq_TZfRuX-0aSH-Ftg60I2Pxr" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1O-UP3b1Bq_TZfRuX-0aSH-Ftg60I2Pxr" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;">Around 6pm I arrived at my host Philippe’s home in La Pocatiere, a small town of around 4000 people. Getting to dip in their backyard pool was the perfect way to cap off a long day in the saddle!</span></div>Sherry Guhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09230010399512298509noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6492558121899739664.post-34995914410395408192022-06-25T17:11:00.000-07:002022-06-26T18:38:22.640-07:00Day 1: Quebec City Deja Vu<div>Distance: 14.5km</div><div>Speed: 16.5km/h</div><div>Weather: Sunny</div><div><br /></div>In true Sherry fashion, the adventure starts before the real adventure even begins. When all of the below happens on the same day, it makes you wonder if biking to Quebec City again would have been the easier way.<div><br /></div><div>1) 15min before I was suppose to board my first flight to Montreal, an announcement comes on that our flight is overbooked and asks for volunteers to give up their seats. I have only ever heard of this so it’s the first time it’s happening to me in real life. I have a minor panic that I’m going to get bumped off because I’m travelling alone, but luckily eventually I get on the plane.</div><div><br /></div><div>2) Upon arrival in Montreal, our entire<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline; font-size: 12pt;"> flight gets locked out of the Montreal Airport for 20min because there was no airport agent to clear us (again another first!) There were so many other passengers with proximate connecting flights that I’m pretty there was going to be riot if we had to wait one more minute. </span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline; font-size: 12pt;">3) When I finally get inside YUL, I run like a madwoman to my gate because there was only 2min left before my boarding time, only to find out that my connecting flight was delayed by 3 hours because there was a shortage of pilots??!! </span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline; font-size: 12pt;">4) A 3 hour airport nap later (which was actually much needed; red eye flights are only good in theory and never good in reality, despite that I always book them in my quest to save time anyways) and after finally flying the last 45min to Quebec City, I end up taking a public bus with my bike because no taxi or Uber wanted to take my bike box. </span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline; font-size: 12pt;">I look on Google Maps for the closest bike shop and the bus got me within 550m of it. As I get off to walk the last stretch, an old man who thought I was crazy for trying to lug my bike box offers me a 2min ride in his truck.</span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">5) I get to the Primeau Velo and all seems to be well with reassembling my bike. The guys there even let me use their bike stand and tools! Until we realize the elastics that hold my fenders to the fork weren’t there for some reason. They were such a small thing but so critical. I take up way too much of the bike shop guys’ time but after 1.5 hours they finally found some time elastics in the back and I’m at last on my way.</span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><br /></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Here’s the only picture I took of the whole day, stumbling accidentally onto the Laval University campus was a full circle moment right there.</span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><br /></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; text-align: left;"><img alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1tTukYrp8Fcm0vLTcEc25RzgS53NVKlc9" src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1tTukYrp8Fcm0vLTcEc25RzgS53NVKlc9" style="height: auto; max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; width: auto;" /><br /></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><br /></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Unfortunately because of all of the above, I wasn’t able to join my Warmshowers hosts Maud & Gail & their son to visit an art exhibit in Vieux Quebec in the early afternoon. The rest of the evening was a lot more smooth sailing. Maud & Gail have bike toured with their kids across Europe and the USA and it was super inspirational to hear their stories!</span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><span style="display: inline;"><br /></span></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><span style="display: inline; font-size: 12pt;">In other news, the French I learned 8 years ago is definitely buried very deep. But maybe it will resurface in these next few days. </span></span></div>Sherry Guhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09230010399512298509noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6492558121899739664.post-3391749815713009232022-06-24T22:09:00.000-07:002022-06-24T22:14:52.793-07:00Day 0: Tour de Poutine 2.0<div><span style="font-size: 12pt; display: inline !important;">Through repeated life experiences, I have come up with the theory that awesome things usually happen on sunny days. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: 12pt; display: inline !important;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-size: 12pt; display: inline !important;">On this first</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"> day of 2022 that finally feels like proper summer in Vancouver, </span><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;">I am at the airport waiting to board a plane (my first time flying since the pandemic), waiting to finish biking across Canada, waiting to finally realize a dream that has been 8 years in the making since the first time around. </span></div><div><br></div><div>I would say that my theory held true today 😊</div><div><br></div><div><br></div>Sherry Guhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09230010399512298509noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6492558121899739664.post-15474424257377641202014-08-09T07:17:00.001-07:002014-08-09T07:45:06.935-07:00Semaine 4/5 de QuébecMaintenant je suis dans le traîne à Toronto.
<div>
</div>

Richard was ever so nice to ride out with me to the highway, even showing me a way to avoid some hills! <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Thank goodness it's gotten a lot cooler but somehow the wind was all over the place today. I guess the Montreal to Quebec ride must be a super popular one because there were so many cyclists out and about. I even had signs from the Ride to Conquer guiding me pretty much the whole way. After 40km I stopped at the the neat little visitor centre in Sainte Anne de la Perade and learned about the huge fishing here in the winter. I was in no rush to leave and even took a nap on a bench right by the praying for the headwind to end. It must have worked because I had mostly a tailwind in the afternoon. The kilometer signs to Quebec became smaller and smaller and as I entered the outskirts and I almost had tears in my eyes. I decided to go see downtown before checking in at the university. Riding to the Plains of Abraham I came upon the heart of Quebec and immediately fell in love with the city. There were a million things going on with the Festival d'ete and many people lined the lively streets. Old Quebec is absolutely gorgeous with the fortification walls and hundreds of years old buildings, even more so when lit up at night. I walked up and around in complete amazement at everything, until as luck would have it came upon a Chez Ashton. What better way to celebrate the finale than another poutine? It was almost 10 when I biked back to Laval University and I ran into Annie just as I rounded the corner at the residences. After sorting out my room we went for a short walk around campus catching up until almost midnight.</span></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><br></font></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><br></font><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJA5cFRtewHm5ajHFxpGd9kSREhb-PxF_Seo5NwmXtOqSJr5u0S89JI4gV0rB_XXPMbKwQp9ZMoHLPDT5quTyHmokeAP0mPtm_bbatos9onKyO4O_4JV4KtMfsPxLMQ5uXUaNEuStqzLJX/s640/blogger-image-2065971229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJA5cFRtewHm5ajHFxpGd9kSREhb-PxF_Seo5NwmXtOqSJr5u0S89JI4gV0rB_XXPMbKwQp9ZMoHLPDT5quTyHmokeAP0mPtm_bbatos9onKyO4O_4JV4KtMfsPxLMQ5uXUaNEuStqzLJX/s640/blogger-image-2065971229.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8crAieMq1UZpb42jcNYRnikQeipzPleBZPbSiPcYvLxetAgjw7Rtz_otqZLaq-JHRk5V7IGW-bR7gVqAoS0Cr57an_6T_bPr4vt0yYcjYcEeV8DhU6zZchLFZ3YeL1lldA6aNJ0BQnE4Y/s640/blogger-image--2100031824.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8crAieMq1UZpb42jcNYRnikQeipzPleBZPbSiPcYvLxetAgjw7Rtz_otqZLaq-JHRk5V7IGW-bR7gVqAoS0Cr57an_6T_bPr4vt0yYcjYcEeV8DhU6zZchLFZ3YeL1lldA6aNJ0BQnE4Y/s640/blogger-image--2100031824.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaKj2EI4lK_WzuW_Vyza8FD2qTw4UrCPtZcnew8uOg53wRf4idtV0YHx5Z5lwCcGy1M_8RyB77ZNvNuNoXF8LAmfBSK7rM5nflvwX-_pbSxwVa92_Cowow5NHxnoJnWRJm5VonWUYELckY/s640/blogger-image-1774590932.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaKj2EI4lK_WzuW_Vyza8FD2qTw4UrCPtZcnew8uOg53wRf4idtV0YHx5Z5lwCcGy1M_8RyB77ZNvNuNoXF8LAmfBSK7rM5nflvwX-_pbSxwVa92_Cowow5NHxnoJnWRJm5VonWUYELckY/s640/blogger-image-1774590932.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit3QsfXVsqhh262qicqYXEEx4iqCr6XPb1wLhDTOcvX1AG2k98VX_8zkx9bjyIuUnIEoPBN5mwvag0w7ACzDrdBRzaOINpVn-Q8-adbr_hWsMEYhPzH0fPuMrBjwH0lbGjIau9ppoOML6L/s640/blogger-image--657993682.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit3QsfXVsqhh262qicqYXEEx4iqCr6XPb1wLhDTOcvX1AG2k98VX_8zkx9bjyIuUnIEoPBN5mwvag0w7ACzDrdBRzaOINpVn-Q8-adbr_hWsMEYhPzH0fPuMrBjwH0lbGjIau9ppoOML6L/s640/blogger-image--657993682.jpg"></a></div></div></div><br></div></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">As it turns out, I didn't die of exhaustion, get eaten by a bear, or ever get caught in any remotely dangerous situations. I followed Sherbrooke Street which eventually turned into Highway 138 and got to pass by the botanical gardens and the Olympic Park. The road followed along the St. Lawerence River for a good portion and I took my first break in Lanoaire at a nice spot right by the water. Some time after the northerly headwind got pretty strong and I felt myself getting low on energy so I pulled into the first Frites Maison that I saw for some poutine, which gave me the power to go all the way to Trois-Riveres. The landscape in this part of Quebec is again very different from Ontario in that there were almost always houses on the side where I rode, never far from civilization. On the way to my host Richard and Sylvie's house on the east side of tr city passed through downtown, which to my surprise had quite a bit going on! There was the Festivoie with many free performances as well as a Friday evening market. After a fabulous dinner, Richard and Sylvie took me back to the city for a tour in the car and told me all about the history. Trois-Riveres is the second oldest city in Quebec after Quebec City and I got to see all the iconic apartments with their spiraling outside stairs. There are two little islands which divide the St. Maurice River into three so Jacque Cartier gave it this name when he first saw it, but it's a bit of a misnomer because there aren't actually three rivers! </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif">I cannot believe that after miles and miles of riding I've come to the other side of the country and tomorrow will reach my final destination. I still hung around until about 9 talking to the women before they had to go out to the fields. Leaving the farm, I dropped down to Highway 344 which was right by the water. After a really nice stretch of Route Verte through Oka Provincial Park, I crossed a little non-motor vehicle bridge to Laval before going over another bridge to Montreal. I never knew that Montreal is an island! My first impression was that everything looked really old (not necessarily in a bad way) and then I realized that the correct description is heritage. Arriving at Alex and Tessa's apartment in Plateau at 1:30, I took a break before going off to explore Montreal for the afternoon. I decided to go on foot for a change so that I didn't have to worry about getting my bike afterwards. I went down to the Old Port and climbed up the Clock Tower. Then I made my way to Old Montreal and had a taste of what being in Europe must be like! It's pretty cool that this was the birthplace of the city and the tall stone buildings and architecture definitely took you back in time. Eventually I stumbled upon the Jazz Festival at Place des Arts. I lost myself in the really good street performers and bands playing. It's amazing that this was completely free! In the evening I met up with Bonnie and she showed me around the McGill campus before we went up to Mont Royal for another spectacular view overlooking the city. Montreal is one cool place and<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> I can't wait to come back here in the next few weeks!</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9pjYwDiBLtBS6F5AtMYr1wMCEKy6zsq_qQbRLpTgseaSNLWS5MDsiXwLxLlyntWIEvyaF6A2I8NF8keEaFLALfhyphenhyphenbmRvZ93M_rWkvmTwmM7huFMOpV-v7fY7urAm40fHhHAlQiJ7u2xyN/s640/blogger-image-1041720815.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; After breakfast I said goodbye to the Warden family and biked away from Ottawa on the Canal for the last time. Crossing into Gatineau I went back onto Highway 148 which became quieter and quieter as the big box stores disappeared. Unlike northern Ontario and the prairies I was never too far from services though. There were always houses on the side of the road and it seemed like the outskirts of one small town met the beginning of another. The Route Verte runs along a large part of this section of the highway so I was able to enjoy segregated paths and wide clean shoulders. I took a short break in Plaisance, which had a very nice welcome sign featuring a bicycle, where for the first time everything was in French. You can learn quite a bit just by reading signs! A short ride down was the pretty town of Montebello and I did a little detour to the Fairmont Chateau Montebello for a look. Every town that I passed had Casse-Croutes and beautiful churches. Around 3 I entered Brownsburg-Chatham and arrived at the organic cooperative farm which also hosts touring cyclists! The farm delivers vegetable baskets as well as operate a bakery and is run by three awesome women. I got to see all the animals with Jenna when she went out to feed them later in the afternoon. After coming in from the day's work, Heather made a great trio of raw salads for dinner before we all indulged in some ice cream dessert.</div><div>It's definitely the home stretch now and it makes me nostalgic to think that I'm almost at the final destination. On the one hand I'm really excited to see and live in Quebec for 5 weeks, but I've come love this biking business so much that I don't want it to end. It's crazy to believe that it's been just over a month because it feels like the only lifestyle that I've ever known.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH0I4IZGXVOkVNr3otNTQ323kW4KNYR8GdsZ5UdJoTV5ak8N2nokhSMJn_v3nTLwP9QzqZs_lRsRKkoaQjN8YKdeboq0DBNnZNNiwV1J42wqxobT7ozEW1yM8pWnLyjQIqsAps1aT9FqwM/s640/blogger-image-1164370397.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH0I4IZGXVOkVNr3otNTQ323kW4KNYR8GdsZ5UdJoTV5ak8N2nokhSMJn_v3nTLwP9QzqZs_lRsRKkoaQjN8YKdeboq0DBNnZNNiwV1J42wqxobT7ozEW1yM8pWnLyjQIqsAps1aT9FqwM/s640/blogger-image-1164370397.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHpu6Hq9Wydv0Ye2sJcOcnDlqP_EPtd9S5Zq0Yhgcefdclm_LvS_u_AH5vtX-CHyHFxeXPvwxoH2yf0JpU3YCAN6Uck_5NcZqEGhmvwp5XcKyNcv4ZxaPraDFG4X9aqC6O9uXdEjuhnC_P/s640/blogger-image--1107322135.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHpu6Hq9Wydv0Ye2sJcOcnDlqP_EPtd9S5Zq0Yhgcefdclm_LvS_u_AH5vtX-CHyHFxeXPvwxoH2yf0JpU3YCAN6Uck_5NcZqEGhmvwp5XcKyNcv4ZxaPraDFG4X9aqC6O9uXdEjuhnC_P/s640/blogger-image--1107322135.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaUqn912gT-QJXNfANPLIqj8RGYrfxamjzN-n-zh8nQOqlTFymsNngkKV46xIeUT9D9W5PNdlYJ5v3z9zZESrUWfu8bJIhfVKdVYtOGhPOPBOrnFO1diO8eC3UjESoopobNF328PFcnq8M/s640/blogger-image--845346370.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaUqn912gT-QJXNfANPLIqj8RGYrfxamjzN-n-zh8nQOqlTFymsNngkKV46xIeUT9D9W5PNdlYJ5v3z9zZESrUWfu8bJIhfVKdVYtOGhPOPBOrnFO1diO8eC3UjESoopobNF328PFcnq8M/s640/blogger-image--845346370.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>Sherry Guhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09230010399512298509noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6492558121899739664.post-45138058885423585182014-07-01T21:13:00.001-07:002014-07-01T21:13:31.082-07:00Day 39: Canada DayDistance: 16km<div>Total distance: 4917km</div><div>Average speed: 18.3km/h</div><div>Weather: sunny </div><div><br></div><div>Happy Canada Day! When I was drafting up a schedule for this trip it couldn't have worked out better that I would be in the best place in the world on Canada Day in order to meet my timeline. Turns out that I got in early which has been a wonderful bonus. I got up nice and early (7:30 so not really but in comparison to the last few days it's early!) and saw the last of the Flag Raising Ceremony at Parliament Hill just as I rode there. At 9:30 it was already completely packed with people donning a sea of red and white (300,000 of them!). I managed to catch glimpses of the Changing of the Guards Ceremony between heads and then spent most of the morning wandering around the booths in Major Hill Park. Clara Hughes, who has been biking across the country since March, had her celebration booth there and was finishing her ride in the city today! I never did meet her out riding as she was just a few days behind. In the afternoon, I took advantage of the free admission to museums today and went to the National Gallery of Canada and then the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau. The gallery was humongous and one of the best that I've been to. My favourite part was looking at paintings of the places that I'd seen on this trip, especially those around the Great Lakes. The Museum of History was even better, entailing a very comprehensive historical account of Canadian history from the perspective of both Europeans and First Nations. They also had a cool snow special exhibit, showing what a true Canadian winter, which admittedly I've never had, is like. Before I knew it it was almost 7 as I walked back across the bridge to Ottawa. I got some of the last grilled chicken sandwiches from the Great Canadian Chicken BBQ and sat down in front of the crowded Parliament lawns enjoying the concert. The only thing left to cap off my incredible stay in Ottawa are the fireworks!</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4wHlEFfL-JTS7QTDnaeq-03akLgXAvpdTBFhYTXOnV-6wO1cCY9dp2T2s7XMlF944PdT0iVfJ5SryyBY5Xvie5fDK6XlvVrfdRF0vPt6l2G5wUGuX8MM3MI4nWtU1udwTUUvGuA7S6gh7/s640/blogger-image-735297592.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4wHlEFfL-JTS7QTDnaeq-03akLgXAvpdTBFhYTXOnV-6wO1cCY9dp2T2s7XMlF944PdT0iVfJ5SryyBY5Xvie5fDK6XlvVrfdRF0vPt6l2G5wUGuX8MM3MI4nWtU1udwTUUvGuA7S6gh7/s640/blogger-image-735297592.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfCpFh92Zpd3CmQh_tcIbhyphenhyphenW7TgJiDiWNKGIPrwWb2WYtn3ytICc4uPP_rGI2KpJwEW30FXEnX2c9aRHGhYeIhQKr1RxkRrjKBYm573aLtz1-MATSMlod_Yu3NGTw4kbnRMF3aIg0dJm-4/s640/blogger-image--367810997.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfCpFh92Zpd3CmQh_tcIbhyphenhyphenW7TgJiDiWNKGIPrwWb2WYtn3ytICc4uPP_rGI2KpJwEW30FXEnX2c9aRHGhYeIhQKr1RxkRrjKBYm573aLtz1-MATSMlod_Yu3NGTw4kbnRMF3aIg0dJm-4/s640/blogger-image--367810997.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div>Sherry Guhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09230010399512298509noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6492558121899739664.post-33424886541827388292014-06-30T14:04:00.001-07:002014-06-30T17:26:57.154-07:00Day 38: Ottawa to Gatineau Park and backDistance: 78km<div>Total distance: 4901km</div><div>Average speed: 20.8km/h</div><div>Weather: sunny</div><div><br></div><div>Somehow I managed to sleep for 11 hours last night and didn't wake up until 10 this morning. I rode across the Portage Bridge to Gatineau and got on the Gatineau Parkway in the park. It was a cyclist's haven with miles of quiet rolling windy roads. They even close them just for pedestrians and cyclists on the weekend. Many cyclists come over for hill training since Ottawa is so flat. I first got to Pink Lake, an unusual lake because it is meromictic, meaning that its upper and lower levels of water never mix. Then I stopped at the nice and cool visitor centre and learned about how the Champlain Sea flooded the Canadian Shield many many years ago. The highlight of the day was getting up to Champlain Lookout, which although not super high by BC standards had a magnificent view of the Ottawa River Valley. I met some wonderful travelers from Mexico who decided to get the attention of everyone there to let them know that I'd biked from Vancouver! I finished the loop with quick stops also at Huron and Etienne-Brûlée lookouts before riding back to Ottawa. Coming over the Alexandra Bridge I was again taken away by the Parliament Buildings. Day 2 of Ottawa continues to impress me in every way.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioT2-_1NPAKEp0PK9FTDUrwz0O9dnZkJFKRG27h-ASsYjptaiW3aFG9sgpYuJp56gKXfL1unTF2ntxw9b-c_iRAAXkAOlAFjs_xXzkvjzE1PFOHa59sNVJ6YPVjF2r9cvx7aG58imXjohd/s640/blogger-image-1359092182.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioT2-_1NPAKEp0PK9FTDUrwz0O9dnZkJFKRG27h-ASsYjptaiW3aFG9sgpYuJp56gKXfL1unTF2ntxw9b-c_iRAAXkAOlAFjs_xXzkvjzE1PFOHa59sNVJ6YPVjF2r9cvx7aG58imXjohd/s640/blogger-image-1359092182.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb2YZ92XxiFJU5gX3FtVhPkV5ck-91Umy20ejJmbuAbj4I_slcH-Swnsi5Kh6U-51t3cByzV_FCJrHrwK2JLX9uMQX5KXjGFICfRkckj-UfG8vdwkTBSfkDsUF8okpWIVb2NKoB4fxxQJb/s640/blogger-image-141971903.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb2YZ92XxiFJU5gX3FtVhPkV5ck-91Umy20ejJmbuAbj4I_slcH-Swnsi5Kh6U-51t3cByzV_FCJrHrwK2JLX9uMQX5KXjGFICfRkckj-UfG8vdwkTBSfkDsUF8okpWIVb2NKoB4fxxQJb/s640/blogger-image-141971903.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAi_yiz8gp3R9hbvZ-wdkluPBA9TmcFXMOD5ZAz_a1v-bGN8xac0yJ245RmytCHoAoXgLH3_7m3eaiG5vAZP69GaGCN_ZHYFAmQDyjEx8NGKFDASsIoB4YAGaGOfIwNmhBJ5_eDxrg3bUc/s640/blogger-image--2102600574.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAi_yiz8gp3R9hbvZ-wdkluPBA9TmcFXMOD5ZAz_a1v-bGN8xac0yJ245RmytCHoAoXgLH3_7m3eaiG5vAZP69GaGCN_ZHYFAmQDyjEx8NGKFDASsIoB4YAGaGOfIwNmhBJ5_eDxrg3bUc/s640/blogger-image--2102600574.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><div><br></div>Sherry Guhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09230010399512298509noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6492558121899739664.post-42002549568944687842014-06-29T18:14:00.001-07:002014-06-30T14:11:39.428-07:00Day 37: Ottawa City Tour<div>Distance: 29km</div><div>Total distance: 4823km</div><div>Average speed: 19.3km/h</div><div>Weather: sunny</div><div><br></div>After a solid 9 hours of sleep, the Warden family were just about to leave for an overnight trip to the Thousand Islands when I woke up. I can't thank them enough for letting me stay while they are gone. I lounged around the house until almost noon before heading out for a tour of the capital. Riding back along the Canal, I stopped at Parliament Hill and stood for the longest time admiring the beautiful buildings and statues of important historical figures. Unfortunately tickets for the tour of the inside were all gone today. There was already the stage setup for Canada Day and for a while a French band was even playing on it. I locked my bike right beside the parliamentary buildings and walked down to the Locks where I watched the fascinating process of a boat getting lowered from the canal down to the river. Afterwards I went in the Chateau Laurier and the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica. In the afternoon I walked to the Byward Markets and spent quite a long time watching the street performers and checking out the multitude of shops. It's incredible that this has been here since the 19th century! On the way back to Parliament Hill, I walked along Sparks Street Mall, which was pretty quiet being a Sunday. Because I just couldn't get enough I sat down on the lawn of Parliament Hill again and watched the hosts rehearse for the Canada Day celebration. Eventually I got my bike and rode down Sussex Drive. It's not everyday that you can ride right up to Rideau Hall and the Official Residence of the Prime Minister! On the way back I also stopped at Rideau Falls and took in the magnificent view of the Ottawa River and the foothills on the Quebec side. I love that Ottawa is so rich <font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif">of both cultural and natural beauty.</font><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><br></font></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO_FwGDK5i4umppkbRqq2vcSkP71zaNdYUkEnch6AJEt0c4m_dR95246EGdjQRKunP1zuqXEYpTvrQzzMYxNigrx7BSJb9pdMwDdwOxg4ZnuDZSoVH7UAIs3oTX3SynoG1wNNeiELjUHRN/s640/blogger-image--2058823926.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; After breakfast I said goodbye to the Weiser family and left Highway 17 for good. I went along Petawawa Blvd all the way into Pembroke where I crossed over the Des Allumettes Bridge into Quebec. I followed along a great off-road trail called the PPJ that is part of Route Verte, Quebec's mass network of bike paths, until it turned into hard packed gravel and my bike didn't like it so much so I turned back onto the highway. Highway 148 is not too busy and had good wide shoulders for the most part. Farmer's fields occupied a great part of the day with the occasional view of the Ottawa River. Being in the Ottawa Valley, it was fairly flat overall although there were some steep 6-10% hills that I (fortunately) went down.<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> The challenge today was the heat, and I stopped often to make sure I wasn't going to overheat or get heatstroke. While pretty much all signs were in French, I was surprised to be greeted in English at the supermarket in Shawville and gas station in Luskville. Katherine told me that apparently many people in this part of Quebec speak nothing but English. Just before 7 I got into Aylmer of Gatineau and crossed the Champlain Bridge into Ottawa. With the parliament buildings in view I felt like a million bucks riding along the river and then the Rideau Canal. And the best part is that I will be able to do this many times over the next few days.
